Ok, I realize that this is probably one of the weirdest titles for a forum thread ever, but this is a genuine problem I'm having. I have an IBM 5154 EGA monitor, and ever since I bought it, it has produced this foul smell when it reaches full temperature, it was so bad initially, that it would give me a terrible headache and make me feel sick if it were on for any prolonged period of time. Eventually I figured out that a bunch of capacitors on the power supply board were leaking, and after replacing them and washing the board with soapy water, the smell was reduced somewhat but I've never been able to get it to go away completely. I've cleaned the PSU board like 3 or 4 times now, and the smell has been reduced to the point that it's tolerable, but it's still there, and I don't understand why, I mean surely there can't be any capacitor goo left on it now? I've looked at the capacitors on the main board, and haven't found any obviously leaky ones there. I haven't opened up the video amplifier module yet, so I don't know if there are any bad caps in there, but I have shined a flashlight through the vent holes of the module, and I can't see anything obvious. Any thoughts on this? I'm thinking that either there is a capacitor somewhere that I've missed or that some of the goo from the PSU caps has leaked into part of the monitor that I haven't cleaned yet. I would also like to clean the main circuit board, but I have no clue how to remove that safely, so any advice on doing that would also be greatly appreciated.
