I need to vent....probably done this before, but it never gets better.......
God, dealing with some important things right now that involve needing HARD COPY of documents - so I have to use our PITA HP C6200 (my wife's printer from prior to when we were married) to take care of things.
I swear it's the Modern BMW of printers. It's bitching right now that the "Ink is Out of Date" and that the Cyan and Pink need replaced before printing anything - including GREYSCALE - WTF!?!? I thought the black cartridge was all that was needed for grey-scale. Being unable to print grey-scale when you don't need color even if the color cartridges are out is just as retarded as how BMW stopped putting oil-fill reservoirs on their cars in recent years. WTF is this shit?
I ran an HP LaserJet 4L through my 486 for over 8 years in my single days - never had one bloody problem with it save for the occasional paper jam caused by impaitience. That thing went all 7 years on the same $150.00 toner cartridge. To refill the C6200 costs about...umm.....$56.99, but I have to do it every bloody year because "We cannot print, your cartridges ar out of date" or we print photos or CD covers "Sorry, your cyan and blue is out, we cannot print out your (100% gray-scale does not need any color at all) Document, please replace pink and blue (for $60.00 at your nearest Staples) to print out your document! (that does not even need those two darned cartridges)" I'd expect this if it were some piece of crap like the Lexmark Z200 that every Tom, Dick, and Harry that gave me an old PC back in the early 2000's would give me, but on a $350.00 printer, even if it is 10 years old, I'd expect better. C'mon, not everyone uses printers just to print out stupid banners about lolcats!
I hear a HP LaserJet 4L calling my name at a local thrift. Hell, it's probably the same one I gave away years ago and it seems to have a new toner cartridge with it. Might as well buy it and get important crap done - just sucks because I'm trying to PURGE computer crap...but the 6200 is used for photos....aggravating.
And the cost of ink and toner is expensive as crap. I buy a $15 laser jet at the thrift shop and then I have to go spend $150.00 - am I buying the printer, or a way to use toner...good god.
I can't afford to buy a new one at this time, trying to save up to buy a house among other things.
I wish the dream of the paperless office would become a reality - unfortunately it can't. Even at work, I still have to walk across the building (quite a large building holding 500 users total) to go print out a page so I can carry someone's desktop to my office without getting nabbed by security for "stealing company assets". Need to amend your Income Tax Return - hope you got a good printer. In the Documentation Age of C.Y.A. (Cover Your Ass). Oh yeah, and good luck printing out "personal" stuff which this probably is classified as on company equipment, have to scan my badge for all printing tasks - so they know who printed what, probably because of what I mentioned before, their goddamn lolcats.
About the only thing that has improved is network printer support. Hardly get any issues with that, it's just the mechanics of the crap. But that's enterprise class gear - not at home crap. And I'm not the one supporting that end anyway.
But good god, It's 2017, you'd think that every place would be able to do things electronically (I'd rather not talk about it here), or at least the quality of printer for the price would have gotten better, actually, it's rare I even SEE a printer at a store anymore.
Just needed to vent, it's been an aggravating Sunday.
