A few years back I was looking for someone on this forum, or else where, who had some expertise in repairing old Tandy Portable Drives, as I didn't want to be bothered with it at that time. While the Club 100.org website is up, I don't think it is a viable option anymore as far as parts go, however I may be wrong about that. In any event, it boils down to the belt on my TDD.
I opened it up today and the belt was literally mush. There was some info available on replacing the belt at www.club100.org/library/sup/tddbelt.txt. The article recommended Russell Industries in New York state. A little digging turned up 800-645-2202 press 0 for the operator and ask for belts. The part number for the belt is FRW8.5 and the specs are as follows:
Inside circumference = 8.5 in
Cross section = .150 in
Wall = .023 in
The price was quoted at $5 ea minimum of 3 plus $6.95 shipping USPS 1st Class.
When I opened the drive, which I purchased back in 1984 or so, I was astonished to see how clean and pristine the mechanism had remained. Even the plastic case looks new and never yellowed. Only about a 2 inch section of the belt remained and it was one click or so above liquid. More info on the repair later.
