PS/1 2011 Error code 1701 (HDD error)

Hello all,

I recently received an IBM PS/1 2011 from my Mother-in-Law. She bought it as her first computer in 1990. It has a 30 MB HDD, 3.5" and 5.25" floppy along with 1 MB of RAM.

I am receiving the 161 and 163 error codes that indicate the CMOS battery is dead. I am planning on doing a mod for the Dallas RTC that is installed with an internal battery. I was told this is the reason why my floppy drives do not work as the configuration has been dumped and the system doesn't know what drives are installed.

Now, to my problem. I ran the configuration program "CONFIGUR" to see if I could at least manually tell the system what drives were installed, even if it did dump it after I shutdown. Unfortunately, I was unable to change any settings for the drives, but in looking around I saw there was an option for the parallel port. I hit enter on that selection expecting to see a list of options, but it just kicked me out to the DOS prompt. I let it sit for a while, but it wouldn't let me do anything. So I ended up doing a Ctrl+Alt+Del reset and when the computer booted back up it gave me my normal 161 and 163 error codes as well as 162 and 1701 now. It won't let me access the HDD now. I shut down the computer for about five minutes thinking that it would forget the inadvertent change I had made, but it still is showing up with the 162 and 1701 errors (as well as 161 and 163).

Does anyone have any idea of how I fix this? I do not have the setup disks at all and at this point, I don't know if that would even matter.

Thanks!
